College Application Timeline 2026–2027: Month-by-Month Checklist

A complete month-by-month college application timeline for the 2026–2027 admissions cycle. Know exactly what to do and when — from junior year through decision day.

Why Timing Matters

The college application process spans over a year, and missing a single deadline can cost you thousands in financial aid — or even your spot at a dream school. This timeline keeps you on track from start to finish.

Junior Year: Spring (March–May 2026)

March–April

  • Take the SAT or ACT for the first time (retake in fall if needed)
  • Start your college list — aim for 8–12 schools across Safety, Match, and Reach categories
  • Research financial aid — learn how FAFSA works and what each school offers
Use our Personalized Match tool to build your initial Safety/Match/Reach list based on your GPA and test scores.

May

  • Visit campuses during spring break or weekends
  • Attend college fairs at your school or nearby venues
  • Start thinking about essay topics — brainstorm experiences and stories

Summer Before Senior Year (June–August 2026)

June–July

  • Finalize your college list — narrow to 8–12 schools you will actually apply to
  • Draft your Common App essay — do not wait until fall
  • Request recommendation letters — ask teachers while the school year is still fresh in their minds
  • Work or volunteer — colleges value productive summers
Get a head start on your essay with our Essay Brainstorming Assistant.

August

  • Revise your essay — get feedback from a teacher, counselor, or trusted adult
  • Create your Common App account — fill in basic information
  • Organize application requirements for each school (supplements, portfolios, etc.)

Senior Year: Fall (September–November 2026)

September

  • Finalize your personal essay — it should be polished and proofread
  • Start supplemental essays — many schools require 1–3 additional essays
  • Retake SAT/ACT if needed (last chance for most Early Action/Decision deadlines)
  • Update your activities list on the Common App

October

  • File the FAFSA — opens October 1. File as early as possible.
  • Submit Early Decision/Early Action applications — most deadlines are November 1 or November 15
  • Request official transcripts from your school counselor

November

  • November 1: Most Early Action and Early Decision I deadlines
  • November 15: Some additional EA/ED deadlines
  • Continue working on Regular Decision supplements

Senior Year: Winter (December 2026–February 2027)

December

  • Receive Early Decision/Action results (usually mid-December)
  • If accepted ED: Withdraw all other applications and celebrate
  • If deferred or rejected: Add Regular Decision schools if needed
  • Continue polishing RD applications

January

  • January 1–15: Most Regular Decision application deadlines
  • Double-check all submissions — essays, supplements, test scores, transcripts
  • Apply for external scholarships — many have January/February deadlines
Browse Scholarships matched to your profile on CollegeFind.

February

  • File CSS Profile if required by your schools
  • Continue applying for scholarships
  • Send any updated grades (mid-year reports) to colleges

Senior Year: Spring (March–May 2027)

March–April

  • Receive Regular Decision results (March–April)
  • Compare financial aid packages — use net price, not sticker price
  • Attend admitted student events — visit campuses, meet future classmates
  • Negotiate financial aid if a competing school offered more
Use our Cost Calculator to compare what you will actually pay at each school.

May 1: National Decision Day

  • Commit to your chosen college by submitting your enrollment deposit
  • Notify other schools that you are declining their offers
  • Accept financial aid package for your chosen school
  • Send final transcripts after graduation

The Bottom Line

Do not cram the entire process into senior fall. Starting early — especially on essays and the FAFSA — gives you more options, more aid, and less stress.
