Why Timing Matters
The college application process spans over a year, and missing a single deadline can cost you thousands in financial aid — or even your spot at a dream school. This timeline keeps you on track from start to finish.
Junior Year: Spring (March–May 2026)
March–April
- Take the SAT or ACT for the first time (retake in fall if needed)
- Start your college list — aim for 8–12 schools across Safety, Match, and Reach categories
- Research financial aid — learn how FAFSA works and what each school offers
Use our Personalized Match tool to build your initial Safety/Match/Reach list based on your GPA and test scores.
May
- Visit campuses during spring break or weekends
- Attend college fairs at your school or nearby venues
- Start thinking about essay topics — brainstorm experiences and stories
Summer Before Senior Year (June–August 2026)
June–July
- Finalize your college list — narrow to 8–12 schools you will actually apply to
- Draft your Common App essay — do not wait until fall
- Request recommendation letters — ask teachers while the school year is still fresh in their minds
- Work or volunteer — colleges value productive summers
Get a head start on your essay with our Essay Brainstorming Assistant.
August
- Revise your essay — get feedback from a teacher, counselor, or trusted adult
- Create your Common App account — fill in basic information
- Organize application requirements for each school (supplements, portfolios, etc.)
Senior Year: Fall (September–November 2026)
September
- Finalize your personal essay — it should be polished and proofread
